In 1964, Dakar was featured as the first stop in the cult surfing film Endless Summer, where two surfers from California set off on a journey to discover the best surf spots around the world. Landing in the country's capital Dakar, they headed straight to Ngor Island, north of the mainland, and rode the legendary point break.

It was the beginning of putting Senegal on the map as a surf destination, and today there is a vibrant local surfing scene. These images were taken while on assignment for New York Times Magazine and featured in their Voyages series.
