GRASSROOTS IN PERU

These images are from my visit to Lima and Cusco in early 2007. I went there on a fellowship given to me
by Global Fund for Children to document the work of their grantee partners. During my stay I collaborated
with the following organizations.

Escuelas Deporte y Vida
(Pro-Child Civil Association: Sports and Life Schools)

Founded in 1996, Deporte y vida serves more that 1,600 children living in the slum of Villa El Salvador.
The majority of the people living there are landless rural migrants who don’t have steady jobs. They live
in makeshift houses built on a landfill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, without electricity or running water.

ADEVI
(Association for the Defense of Life)
In the brickyards of Huachipa, a community north of Lima
even the youngest member of a family help in the production of bricks. The technique used in the
production is very old method that involves long hours of manual labor in the hot sun. Adevi are working
to eradicate child labor and also reintegrating children into formal education.

Yanapanakusun
(Let’s Help Each Other)
In Cusco it’s common for girls from poorer ruler areas to be sent
away by their families to the cities to work as domestic servants. These girls work under very harsh
conditions seven days a week from morning to night. Some suffer from physical and sexual abuse and are
not allowed to leave the house. Yanapanakusun was founded in 2001 and is helping more then 150 girls by
